Lyrics
You never saw it comin'
But, boy, you were a-gunnin' for me
But all the bad-mouthin', trash-talking
Couldn't get me to concede
You counted me out
Tried to tear me down
But you forgot how
Headstrong I can be
CHORUS
Guess that makes me a dark horse
The kind that everyone ignores
Reckon with this force
I will weather all the storms
You can criticize
Try to cut me down to size
But that just make me try more
Yeah, I'm a dark horse
Don't underestimate me
You say you're being honest
But honestly? You're being cruel
All your put downs and smack talk
I just use it as fuel
Out of the shadows
I dodge your arrows
And it just goes
To show that you overlooked me
I'm not giving up
I'm not giving in
Say what you want
I'm not listening
CHORUS TWO
Guess that makes me a dark horse
The kind that everyone ignores
Reckon with this force
I will weather all the storms
Call me rebellious
I'm just relentless
I believe when no one else does
Yeah, I'm a dark horse
Hey, hey, I'm a dark horse
Honey, I'm a dark horse
Yeah, Sugar, I'm a dark horse
Don't underestimate me

BEHIND THE MUSIC
Dark Horse
When I wrote "Dark Horse," I wasn't looking for therapy. By now, if you've read a few of these song stories, you probably have noticed a theme... a trend.. a motif, if you will. The past few years have been challenging, to say the least, and I've had to confront a lot of demons, ghosts, and other monster metaphors on my own. In my typical fashion, I tend to dwell and hyper-fixate on it and then write a song about it and then I feel better. Like a low leveled D&D spell, the effect is generally temporary, though repeated uses do seem to be cumulative, so maybe someday I won't think about all this shit at all.
Anyway, I was driving home one day when this sort of sing-songy, cheerleader-esque thing popped into my head, lyrics and all:
You counted me out
Tried to tear me down
But you forgot how
Headstrong I can be
And immediately after, my brain supplied: "That's what makes me a dark horse."
