Lyrics

Fortunes told; enemies hexed
I don't need your money and I like sex
Starting fires just to watch them burn
Pockets filled with graveyard dirt
I'll be the villain of your story
I live for the myths
You're out here running your mouth
I tell the truth just for kicks
Don't need no defense
Don't need to repent
But you're about to find out
I don't respond well to threats

I'm a bad witch
You wanna test me? You can witness it
We still got covens we just call 'em cliques
The days are gone when we whispered it

Heathens, suffragettes
Meet at the crossroads, revel in their discontent
Get loud; share some skin
Eat from the fruit of original sin
Call us devils in your fiction
That's just how we roll
Headstrong, free-willed; can't be controlled
Opinionated
Educated
I'd tell you to go to hell
But I never wanna see you again

When I was a child, I walked on hallowed ground
Won't toe the line so they turned their backs and turned me out
Superstition
You want submission
But what you got, what you got, what you got....

Is a bad witch
You wanna test me? You can witness it
We still got covens, we just call 'em cliques
The days are gone when we whispered it
Yeah, I'm a bad witch
What you see is what you get
Yeah, I'm a bad witch
Anything I want I'm manifesting it

BEHIND THE MUSIC

Bad Witch

Much has been written about the propensity of churches to brand free-thinking, educated, self-sufficient women who question authority as "witches," and I'm not going to go over the history of all that here. Suffice to say that I have been the victim of such branding, though, in these more modern times, they have a tendency to distill their ire about women who ask them to explain their reasoning for their edicts and ideology down to pejoratives of a more sexual nature: whore, slut, "Jezebel," etc. At least, that's my experience.

I could go on at length about my experiences with these sorts of self righteous bullies, but I'll save that for another time. Going back to what I wrote about for "Hi, I'm Trouble," "Bad Witch" is a continuation of this idea of re-appropriating the negative slander women have been getting from traditional authority figures since time immemorial. It's about acknowledging that being extraordinary threatens the traditional male power structures - particularly in churches and where faith and religion are concerned - and taking them back.

"Oh, I'm a wanton? Damn skippy! An instrument of the devil, you say? For wanting a voice in how our society is run? Toot, toot, mother f***er!"
